TOP GEAR SHOW - Live 20-22 Feb 2009
Interview with Show Designer - Patrice Guy (Technical Director of Glorious Entertainment Production)
Q1: How to make it safe without minimize the impression for the audiences?
Patrice: Creating the strongest impression for the public whilst maintaining the highest level of safety
is the first objective of any production. We, at Glorious Entertainment Production,
believe in the rule of ˇ§minimum load for maximum effectˇ¨.
The challenges facing us were numerous; Close proximity to the audience, cars performing stunts
only a few meters away, enclosed space and requests from the customer to create the maximum
impact possible were but a few.
We managed to overcome these challenges through the use of low-smoke and zero residue pyrotechnic
items especially imported for this show. We also designed and fabricated custom-made holders for
the pyrotechnic devices tailored to this specific environment. Finally, numerous meetings with all
the parties involved in the production were held so that all were aware of the pyrotechnic items
being used, their placement, and our enforcement of exclusion zones around them.
Q2: Which part is most difficult for you to overcome?
Patrice: This production was one of the largest indoor pyrotechnic displays that Hong Kong has seen
in recent years. The most difficult part that we had to overcome was convincing all the
relevant authorities, as well as the venue's management, that we could design and execute
very impressive pyrotechnic effects, whilst maintaining the highest levels of safety.
We managed to do this by cooperating very closely with the other parties involved in a
completely transparent manner. We submitted a complete list of all the devices we were
planning to use, along with their performance specifications and recommended safety distances.
We prepared a detailed method statement outlining every step of the production, implementation
and execution phase of the project. We also submitted detailed drawings of every scene indicating
the location of all effects, their distance to the audience, the description of the effect, and the
mounting method used for each effect.
We then prepared a risk assessment study covering all the details of our production and contingency measures
implemented to remove any risks.
Lastly, we organized a demonstration of all the pyrotechnic effects at the venue, prior to the show.
Q3: Which part is special design for Hong Kong stage?
Patrice: All of the pyrotechnic effects for this show were custom-made for the Hong Kong stage.
Although we did receive a detailed pyrotechnic rundown from the UK production team,
most of the effects listed were either not authorized for use in HK, or not suited for this
particular venue.
Through careful collaboration with the production team, we manage to modify the scenes
and the products used in order to stay true to the original design, whilst respecting all
local rules and regulations.
Q4: What did GEP learn from this TOP GEAR show?
Patrice: What we learned the most from this production is the value of preparedness and redundancy.
One of the many challenges we were facing was the very short time frame to execute this
production, both in terms of logistics and execution.
Through careful planning, rehearsals, and redundancy, we managed to get everything
done, within our time frame, with no impact on the other production departments.
Q5: Any extra bit you want to mention?
Patrice: I would like to thank the management of the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre
and also the staff at the Television and Entertainment Licensing Authority for their precious
help and collaboration in making this production possible.
